Ugoira

Ugoira (うごイラ) is a unique animated illustration format created by and exclusive to Pixiv.

It's essentially a short, looping animation made from a series of still images (frames) that artists upload. Think of it as something between a GIF and a short video clip – but it's Pixiv's own proprietary format.

18+ only

  • Short loops (usually 1-10 seconds)
  • Created by uploading multiple frames with timing data
  • Higher quality than typical GIFs
  • Popular for animation practice, character movements, and adding life to illustrations
  • Can only be viewed on Pixiv (or downloaded and converted to other formats)

Artists use ugoira to show simple animations like:

  • Character breathing or blinking
  • Hair/clothing moving in wind
  • Subtle expressions changing
  • Loop animations of scenes

It's particularly popular in the Japanese art community for adding motion to manga-style artwork and doujinshi characters without needing full animation software or video editing skills.
