Slavery Trope
Slavery Trope (奴隷・どれい / dorei) is a common (and controversial) narrative device in fantasy romance, especially in isekai genres, where one character is enslaved—legally, magically, or through circumstance—by another. This trope is often used to explore themes of power imbalance, forced proximity, devotion, rebellion, or redemption. In many cases, the enslaved character develops a romantic or emotional relationship with their master, sometimes blurring lines between consent and coercion.
While some stories use the slavery trope to critique systemic oppression or highlight character growth and liberation arcs, others romanticize the dynamic in ways that are fetishistic. It’s a popular trope in Japanese and Korean web novels, especially involving beastkin, demons, or protagonists acquiring slaves as allies or love interests.
Caution: This trope can be intense or triggering for some readers. Always check content warnings.
