Amerimanga
A term for comic books created by American (or Western) artists in a Japanese manga style. Think black-and-white interiors, big expressive eyes, speed lines, and panel layouts inspired by classic manga—but produced outside Japan.
Context:
Amerimanga boomed in the early 2000s when publishers like Tokyopop started bringing out original English-language manga (OEL). While some purists side-eye it as “not real manga,” Amerimanga has carved out its own niche, blending Western storytelling with anime aesthetics.
Example Usage:
- “This series is technically Amerimanga—it’s drawn in Tokyo style, but the creator’s from Texas.”
- “I got into Amerimanga through titles like Dramacon and Bizenghast back in the day.”
