Glossary Term
Traps
“Traps” refers to a genre or trope in manga, anime, and related media involving characters who present as a different gender than their assigned sex, often for comedic, romantic, or erotic effect.
More specifically:
- A “trap” is typically a male character who convincingly looks and often acts like a female character, to the point where other characters (and the audience) may initially believe they are female.
- The “trap” trope frequently leads to gender-bending hijinks, misunderstandings, and comedic situations—like romantic interests being surprised or embarrassed when the character’s biological sex is revealed.
- In ecchi (mildly erotic) content, this can also be used for sexual tension or fan service.
