Doujinshi (同人誌) are self-published works created by fans, mostly in Japan. The word combines doujin (a group of people who share an interest) and shi (magazine or publication). While doujinshi can cover any topic, the most widely shared type online is adult fan fiction based on existing anime, manga and video game characters.

Unlike official manga published by studios, doujinshi are made by independent artists and circles. They are sold at events like Comiket in Tokyo and shared online in digital form. The quality ranges from hobbyist sketches to full-color professional-grade art. Many well-known manga artists started their careers publishing doujinshi.
