Danmaku
Danmaku, a Japanese term meaning “bullet curtain,” refers to a video game genre where players dodge a dense barrage of projectiles, also known as a “bullet hell”. It can also refer to the internet phenomenon of scrolling user comments that appear over a video, creating a similar visual effect of a “bullet screen”.
In video games
– Genre: It is a subgenre of shoot 'em up (shmup) games, first popularized in 1993.
– Gameplay: The primary challenge is to navigate intricate patterns of enemy fire that fill the screen, often requiring precise and calm movements rather than fast reactions alone.
– Etymology: The term literally translates to “barrage” or “curtain of bullets”.
– Examples: Famous examples include the Touhou Project and DoDonPachi series.
On the internet
– Feature: Danmaku (or “danmu” in Chinese) is a system where user comments are overlaid directly on a video in real-time, synchronized with the playback.
– Experience: This creates a “co-viewing” experience, allowing viewers to interact and see each other's comments as they scroll across the screen.
– Origin: The system was popularized by Japanese video-sharing sites like Niconico and has since been adopted by other platforms.
